one dress ten ways – how to style a capsule wardrobe – outfit roundup

How to Style the Mustard Trend for WorkArati Devasher yellow scarf

On the first of April, I took on a challenge and created, photographed and blooged about the first of ten outfits. Over the ten days, with the same shirt-dress being included in each outfit, I accessorised with pieces from my own product line.

Reflecting on how to style one item with a limited choice or capsule wardrobe and unlimited accessories definitely led to more than a few revelations.

There were ten outfits, but I chose to wear multiple necklaces and so there are more than Continue reading

how to wear yellow: making a difficult colour work for you

Yellow is, at the best of times, a tough colour to wear without it wearing you instead. I, personally, love yellow in and of itself, but definitely draw the line when it comes to covering my whole body in the brashness of it. Here’s where accessories come in handy, as you can see above – I added a bright yellow bead necklace to a simple black and white dress. It draws attention to your face and makes an ordinary outfit extraordinary. Choosing the right shade isn’t as important when it’s such a small quantity – you can get away with a little mismatch. With a top or a dress it could be a disaster to have the wrong tone for your skin.

Another way to use the same necklace is with a dress that has of a touch of yellow in it; perhaps a band of yellow on the sleeves, or in the pattern or as a border. It could even be a pocket detail. The advantage of this is that the yellow doesn’t even have to match… just being the same colour family is enough.

Scarves from my Midnight Collection are a very easy way to inject a little bold colour into your outfits. A simple kerchief knotted at the wrist adds a pop of yellow into your day without screaming “I’m following a trend” at everyone in the office. If you’re wearing a suit, this could just as easily be popped into the breast pocket as a pocket square.

A scarf need not be completely yellow either… here’s a 90cm square one that’s simply draped but very effective.

The same style of scarf can be tied in many different ways, to be as simple or as complex as you wish. You can definitely combine yellow with dark plain colours too – this actually creates a very striking look without being over the top.

I hope I’ve helped you be more confident about wearing this bold colour. Here are some of the necklaces and scarves featured in this post, available to purchase at AratiDevasher.co.uk. Have you now been inspired to add a dash of Daffodil yellow to your own wardrobe? Comment below and tell me.

spring style: day 10/10 combining the #10x10challenge and #onedressthirtyways – how to style a capsule wardrobe

Day 10! The last and final outfit in my challenge. I’m going to miss styling those pieces every day. … The shirt-dress is back being tucked in and used as a shirt. It really is supremely comfortable worn this way, despite the length having to be stuffed in. I’ve styled the Citrus Ripples silk scarf with this outfit – it’s one of the most complex designs I’ve ever painted.

Styled with cream trousers and a linen blazer, the subtle citrus colours create a vibrant spring look. A little bit of pattern in your scarf and shoes can make a light coloured outfit more unique. Try the same scarf with dark wash jeans and a blue blazer for Continue reading

Day 9 of 10… Taking the shirt-dress back to coat status, I’ve paired it with the silver cami and pencil skirt. My own personal red paisley scarf adds a dash of colour to the monochrome outfit, and the snake heels bring some flair to my feet.

Cinching in the waist with a soft leather belt looped multiple times and tied with a bow adds more structure to the loose ‘coat’.

If you’d like to catch up on why I’m styling a shirt-dress in ten different ways, you might want to read my first post, which explains the whys and wherefores of the #10x10challenge and #onedressthirtyways. Tomorrow I will post about Continue reading

Day 8 of 10… Taking the shirt-dress back to summer with the snake print shorts and platform sandals again, this is one of my favourite scarves to pair with summer outfits. The Mariana scarf is skinny, with a luxe satin sheen, and adds that essential je ne sais quois to an otherwise basic look.

The scarf’s deep blue hues (inspired by the Mariana trench, after which it is named) are duplicated in the shorts, and I like the fact that my feet are unobtrusive in tan leather, elongating my legs – for my caramel skin tone the cognac colour turns into Continue reading

Day 7 of 10… Taking the shirt-dress to a whole new level, and styling it inspired by the legendary Frida Kahlo, who used myriad colours in her art as well as her daily clothes. This maxi dress (I got mine years ago, and this year’s version is here) also feels a lot like some of Frida’s clothing. In styling it as a bustier over the shirt-dress, I feel I am, in some small way, reinventing her look.

Adding multiple necklaces seemed natural, although at first I had thought to style a scarf with this look. I’ve used four colours… Fern, Daffodil, Rose and Cornflower. The ribbon ends allowed me to stagger the lengths and create a bib-like effect. It’s very folksy looking and it’s Continue reading

Day 6 of 10… I’m reprising the shirt-dress as a duster coat. It’s the most natural way to wear this, particularly when it’s not quite warm enough to have your arms out. Paired with the ecru cropped trousers and silver camisole for a little something extra, it’s a pretty neutral outfit – until I add in the cool blue tones of the light chiffon Flitting Fish scarf. It’s perfect for the spring when you still Continue reading

Day 5 of 10… Taking the shirt-dress to a more formal zone and using it as a shirt works only because the fabric is so soft and thin. It hardly shows beneath my jumpsuit, and in fact creates a nice soft layer inside the rather scratchy fabric. it doesn’t poke out the bottom of my outfit either.

And yes, that is indeed a bow tie around my neck. But ties are for men, you say? Well, style rules were made up by people and new ones are made every day. Feel free to colour outside the lines – that’s what fashion is all about, making up your own rules and having Continue reading

spring style: day 4/10 combining the #10x10challenge and #onedressthirtyways – how to style a capsule wardrobe

Day 4 of 10… I’ve chosen to go a little off piste today and pretend it’s summer already – after all, I did choose these bits for my 10 pieces of clothing. I’m pairing shorts and a cami top while using the shirt-dress as a duster jacket. I love a little colour-clash, so went with not one, but TWO bead necklaces layered a la Iris Apfel – in hibiscus pink and buttercup yellow. I tried three, but I preferred the look of just two, and the third (in green) took too much attention away from the outfit itself.

It feels as though I’m wearing featuring a playsuit, and the belt adds a little definition. The shirt-dress-as-duster-jacket adds a little bit of a grown-up feel as do the heels. This look is purely a fever dream, because the current Continue reading

Day 3 of 10… featuring a long scarf from my Midnight collection – the Autumn long silk scarf. This time, I’m treating the longline shirt as a dress, wearing it without the trousers from Day 1. The bright pop of red in the scarf is echoed in the very retro red kitten heels and to streamline the Continue reading
